Traveling west across the beautiful Rio Grande Valley, we descend into a steep walled canyon. We walk among the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings, pueblos and petroglyphs for which New Mexico is famous. On the way, the area’s spectacular geology, history, light and color, plus a quick look at a modern pueblo, and a special visit to the research facility -including Human Genome Project-at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Hiking a Geological Wonderland at Tent Rocks National Monument and a visit to Cochiti Pueblo
We hike into the Jemez Mountains foothills, exploring history and remarkable scenery created by monstrous ancient volcanoes. Tent Rocks - “Kasha Katuwe” - is truly a remarkable, one of a kind geological experience. We walk through a world of giant castles made of volcanic ash. Your guide will be a regional expert and will share unique knowledge and history of the Jemez and Cochiti Pueblo people - descendants of “the Ancient Ones”. Includes a visit to Cochiti Pueblo.
